Wampus Art Show

Grade 5

Students in fifth grade explore the conceptual, socio-political and technical aspects of art making. Throughout our time together, students gain experience creating in both conventional and unconventional art practices, exploring drawing, sculpting, collaging, as well as sound art, examining the inclusion of artwork created solely with sound in traditional, visual art spaces.  As much of the artistic process is rooted in individual thought and self- expression, creating intuitively, and exploring materials, our sculptures, collages, drawings, and paintings are reflective of these methods and practices.

An exploration of earthworks, whereby students create ephemeral artwork composed of natural materials, is followed by an in-depth study of value and shading, resulting in drawings of objects from nature that appear to have three dimensional form.

A study of the ways creative minds around the globe are repurposing the plastic plaguing our oceans into artwork, products and structures that are beneficial, resulted in unique and insightful designs and “prototypes,” that raise awareness for this issue and repurpose this potentially harmful material.

5th Grade is a culminating year of perfecting learned techniques.  Students in the 5th grade use a wide variety of materials.  Projects become units where students spend 5 or 6 weeks focused on various components of a particular lesson.  Although the lessons are longer, the success is the completed projects.  Students are very proud to finally accomplish very advanced art projects.

5th Grade Encore is focused on one and two point perspective. Each lesson builds on the difficulty of the various techniques. A final two week project engages students to really think about how perspective works on a flat sheet of paper.  Students are often amazed at the results of their efforts.
